David Seguinot – Direct Support Professional Graduate

“My career in the human services field began with the Advantage Career Training (ACT) Direct Support Professional (DSP) program. The ACT program helped prepare me for a career as a Direct Support Professional. The course assisted me in developing the skills needed to assist developmentally disabled individuals in achieving their personal goals and gave me the tools needed to learn the daily operations of the human service field in the DSP setting. A week after completing the ACT course,  I was placed with a company full-time as a  Direct Support Professional, and shortly after, was offered the opportunity to advance in my position. Currently, I am managing two facilities for a human service agency. I am faced with exciting new challenges every day and I have the chance to think outside the box and identify new solutions, while continuing to learn and grow in my role. I feel that the Direct Support Professional ACT program helped prepare me to take on such challenges and helped develop the skills needed in order to be successful.”

Chris Phipps – Direct Support Professional Graduate

“I had decided to make a career change and was already working towards my Master’s Degree in Human Services when I learned about the Advantage Career Training Direct Support Professional program.  What interested me in the program was the fact that ACT provided the education and instruction needed to work directly with individuals in the human services field, providing them with the support and services needed to be active and thrive in the community.  I found the ACT program to be very intensive and fast-paced, covering a great deal of valuable information in a three week period. That information was very practical, as it is used virtually every day working in this field.  Though I had some experience in a related field, I felt that the ACT program gave me the foundation and tools necessary to be successful working as a Direct Support Professional.  I was fortunate to be able to become a Residential Program Manager after working 3 months as a DSP.  I did have management experience, but I do not believe that I would have been successful as a Residential Manager without the education I received through ACT, as well as the experience of working with individuals as a DSP.  ACT prepared me to expect the unexpected and gave me the tools to be able to respond in a professional manner to any situations that I might encounter on any given workday.  The field of human services can be challenging at times, but it is extremely rewarding knowing that one can make such a positive impact in someone else’s life.  I am very happy that I made the decision to attend ACT and begin my “new” career in the dynamic field of human services.”
